Copyright notices

Send copyright notices about a RootsLanding-hosted Digital Family Home to our designated agent. For other hosted-content concerns, use Report content. Our Published Content Policy explains hosting restrictions and review.

Designated agent

Our designation is listed in the U.S. Copyright Office directory.

Submitting a copyright notice

A written notice should include:

1. Your physical or electronic signature, as the copyright owner or someone authorized to act for them.
2. The copyrighted work involved, or a representative list when several works at one site are involved.
3. The material you want removed or disabled and enough location information, including specific hosted URLs, for us to find it.
4. Your contact details, including address, phone number and email if available.
5. A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not permitted by the rights holder, their agent or the law.
6. A statement that the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the owner of the right involved.

Use URLs and descriptions. Do not send codewords, device credentials or copies of suspected child exploitation material. The ordinary report form is not a substitute for a complete copyright notice. See the Copyright Office's notice requirements.

Counter-notices and review

If material you published was disabled following a copyright notice and you believe this resulted from a mistake or misidentification, you may send a written counter-notice to the same agent. Include:

• Your signature, the affected material and its previous location.
• Your statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith the restriction resulted from a mistake or misidentification.
• Your name, address and phone number. State that you consent to the jurisdiction of the U.S. federal district court for your address or, if outside the United States, a U.S. federal district where RootsLanding may be found. State that you will accept service of process from the original claimant or their agent.

A counter-notice can have legal consequences and includes information that may be forwarded to the claimant. Consider legal advice before submitting one. The applicable forwarding, litigation-notice and restoration rules are in 17 U.S.C. § 512(g). Other independent policy or legal restrictions may require separate review.

Hosting and repeat infringement

We may restrict or end hosting for repeat infringement in appropriate circumstances. We review the facts and relevant notices; an unverified allegation alone does not establish infringement. Hosting restrictions do not delete your local Digital Family Home or source files. See the Terms of Use and how we handle report information.
